Miles to the Co-op: 105

Kevin and Liza Hassevoort run one of the few commercial aquaponic fish farms in the United States. Around six years ago the Hassevoorts began experimenting with aquaponic growing and today produce chemical-free, all natural tilapia, basil, lettuce and collards in their greenhouses. Surprisingly, the whole operation runs on less energy than a household vacuum cleaner requires.

Kevin, a former electrical engineer, believes this farming system produces tilapia that is slightly sweeter and without that fishy taste. Liza, a former accountant, loves working with her green thumb and producing quality local vegetables. Their system currently holds 1,000 tilapia, but due to high demand they are growing very quickly!

We currently carry their tilapia, baby collards and living lettuce.
